Christmas Merriment in Mandalay

Spend the holiday season in the “Land of a Million Pagodas,” make festive pastries, and visit ancient temples & legendary palaces.

About Your Trip

During a very special time of year — Christmas! — venture to Mandalay, the last royal capital of Burma, where you’ll delve into treasured antiquities and sacred sites. But before all that fun, you’ll celebrate Christmas with yuletide-inspired baking, when you set out to make holiday pastries such as cookies and a gingerbread house.

The excitement doesn’t stop there! Explore ancient landmarks starting with a tour of Shwenandaw Kyaung (“Golden Palace Monastery”), an architectural masterpiece made of hand-carved teakwood. Next, you’ll see the remarkable Kuthodaw Paya followed by a stop at the renowned Mandalay Palace — King Mindon’s contribution to the royal city. At the Mahamuni Temple, you can see one of the most famous Buddha images in existence! End the day with a spectacular sunset at U Bein Bridge, the longest and oldest teakwood bridge on Earth.

The following day gives you ample leisure time to discover the city at your own pace. If you have the energy, climb 1,729 stairs to the summit of nearby Mandalay Hill for panoramic views of the city and beyond. Or, if you want to venture farther, you can take a boat tour along the Irrawaddy River to Mingun, home to the 90-ton (81,647-kilogram) bronze Mingun Bell, the largest, fully intact bell in the world. How about an extinct volcano? At Mt. Popa, you can traverse the winding covered staircase to visit the monastery and temple complex on the hilltop, with shrines to the 37 nats (or spirits) along with the spectacular views.

What we love:
• You can’t actually read the world’s biggest book — it consists of more than 700 inscribed marble stone slabs — but you can definitely see it at the Buddhist stupa, Kuthodaw Paya.
• Mahamuni Temple is an important pilgrimage site and home to a sacred gold-leaf-covered Buddha statue.
• If you’re a fan of George Orwell, you’ll be interested to know that his classic novel “Burmese Days” is set in 1930s Mandalay when the country was under British colonial rule.

Destination

Considered the center of Burmese culture, Mandalay’s rich and exotic past attracts tourists from all over the world. With Buddhism as the predominant religion, the city is home to architecturally impressive monasteries and striking pagodas, including the Mahamuni Temple, a major pilgrimage site. Built in 1785, this temple houses a 12-ton (10,886-kilogram) Buddha covered in gold leaf. Reminders of Mandalay’s past as the last royal capital of Burma are seen throughout the city, including the royal palace. Built in 1861, this mighty fortress is located in the heart of the city, at the foot of Mandalay Hill, surrounded by a wide moat and high walls.

Along with diverse and unique landmarks, the city also offers a variety of savory, authentic cuisine — from Shan and Thai to Chinese and Indian. Notable traditional Burmese dishes include mohinga, a popular rice noodle and fish soup, and htoe mont, a sticky, sweet rice cake.
