Savor the Sights & Flavors of Valencia

Explore the medieval & modern sights of Valencia — such as the legendary Holy Grail — then learn how to make paella & horchata.

About Your Trip

Travel through the centuries on this DreamTrip to Valencia, Spain’s third-largest city. Your journey begins with an exciting walking tour, first stopping at the 13th-century Valencia Cathedral, home of a mummified arm from St. Vincent of Saragossa and a holy chalice purported to be the Holy Grail. Impossible to miss, the building boasts an octagonal bell tower, and right beside it is the 17th-century, blue-domed Basilica de la Virgen. At Torres de Serranos, you can walk through the 14th-century gate tower that was once part of the city wall. Continue to the UNESCO-protected Lonja de la Seda, a Gothic-style building built in the 15th century that became the heart of the silk exchange. After working up an appetite, take part in a cooking class where you’ll make paella, a traditional rice dish that comprises combinations of meat, seafood, seasonings and vegetables such as green beans and lima beans.

Then, switch gears as you head into the 20th century at the Mercado Central, one of the largest markets in Europe, and 21st-century City of Arts and Sciences, a one-of-a kind futuristic complex. End your day with a tour of a tiger nut field and the opportunity to make horchata, a sweet beverage made from tiger nuts.

What we love:

• Old Town features a maze of pedestrian-only alleyways.
• Horchata is full of vitamins and minerals and is high in calcium. Plus, it contains no lactose, making it a perfect milk replacement!
• Valencia features a bicycle sharing program, encouraging the use of bicycles instead of cars. The closest station to your hotel is No. 60 near Avenida Baleares and Carrer del Dr. Manuel Candela.

Destination

Valencia, Spain, has a long history as an important port town set in a prime location on the Mediterranean coastline. In fact, in 1438 it was officially named the Port of Valencia and has grown into one of Europe’s busiest container ports. Its Old Town, dating to 138 B.C., is a series of narrow cobblestone streets, winding through the historic center in a way that can challenge tourists’ navigational skills. Aptly named “City of Bell Towers,” Valencia boasts several of these impressive structures, including at El Miguelete, Iglesia de Santa Catalina, Torres de Serranos and Torres de Quart.
